He then pursued teaching for 12 years, in preparation for a jury if there ever was one; this eventually led Watts to attend the University of Kansas and obtain a juris doctor degree from Kansas University in 1999. He then joined the county attorney's office in Butler County, Kansas, which he left in 2010 for private practice. Watts is currently a member of the Kansas Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
