Free Legal Advice

In today’s world, protecting your rights is more important than ever. Courts, law enforcement, and politicians eager to appear “tough on crime” often push the limits of what’s legal. Here’s some essential advice to help safeguard yourself:

01  BE POLITE TO LAW ENFORCEMENT

You may have the legal right to vent or “speak your mind,” but it rarely helps your situation. Stay calm and respectful.

02  Don’t answer questions

Unless you are being lawfully detained—meaning the officer has reasonable suspicion based on specific facts—you are not required to provide ID or answer questions. And you are never obligated to answer anything that could incriminate you. Silence is often your strongest defense.

03  Never consent to a search

Politely refuse any request to search your person, vehicle, or home. But if the officer proceeds anyway, do not resist physically. Instead, fight that search where it matters—in court, with James R. Watts by your side.
